PETALING JAYA: Selangor police will come down hard on Mat Rempit, and police personnel who fail to act on public complaints against the menace will face disciplinary action.
State Deputy Police Chief Sen Asst Comm I Datuk Jamshah Mustapa said police have been closely monitoring the problem and would continue to conduct operations throughout the state.
He said all district police chiefs in Selangor had been directed to increase their operations to crackdown on the Mat Rempit.
“We will not tolerate any such activities especially when they start committing crimes like robberies, snatch thefts and assaults.
“Members of the public who have information as to where Mat Rempit are hanging out or gathering should contact the nearest police station immediately,’’ he said.
SAC Jamshah assured the public that police would act on their reports immediately failing which stern action would be taken against the errant police personnel concerned.
Petaling Jaya OCPD Asst Comm Arjunaidi Mohd said in over 1,000 operations conducted in the district between January 2008 and March this year, police arrested 72 mat rempit, resulting in fewer crimes committed by them.
So far this year, only two cases involving Mat Rempit crimes were reported in the district, involving a 38-year-old Filipino who was attacked by 15 mat rempit with a metal pipe, causing her to almost lose consciousness.
The same group were also believed to have punched a woman before robbing her of her handbag.
