Parliament in Brief: Why Mat Rempit are idolised

FREEDOM, money, women and the sense of heroism are among the reasons why Mat Rempit are idolised by the young, Deputy Youth and Sports Minister Wee Jeck Seng told the House yesterday.

"Our study shows that 84.1 per cent become Mat Rempit to fill their spare time, 37 per cent because of friends and 27 per cent because of the great feeling they have after a race," he said replying to a question by Loke Siew Fook (DAP-Rasah) on the programmes taken by the ministry to solve Mat Rempit problems which have become a public nuisance.

He said Mat Rempit, aged between 18 to 25 were now being rehabilitated by the ministry through various programmes.
